Dr H. Thanisch: A legend on the Moselle
The Dr H. Thanisch winery, based in Bernkastel-Kues on the Moselle since 1636, is one of the most traditional Riesling domains in Germany. It is famous for owning the Bernkasteler Doctor, one of the most famous vineyard sites in the world. Legend has it that a wine from this steep slope cured a sick elector in the 14th century - since then, the name "Doctor" has stood for exceptional quality.
The Thanisch family has shaped the delicate, mineral style of Mosel Rieslings for generations. After the death of Dr Hugo Thanisch in 1900, his descendants took over the estate, with Sophia Thanischnow in the 15th generation of management. The estate relies on traditional manual labour: the grapes from the extremely steep Doctor vineyard are harvested by hand, the wines mature in large vats (old wooden barrels) and emphasise freshness, fruit and delicate acidity.
The Bernkasteler Doctor Riesling- whether dry Kabinett, late harvest or noble sweet Trockenbeerenauslese - epitomises elegance and longevity. The wines reflect the unique terroir of slate soils and optimal sun exposure.
A milestone was the division of the estate into two lines ("Thanisch Erben Müller-Burggraef" and "Thanisch Erben Thanisch"). Both preserve the heritage, with the original lineage under Sophia Thanisch continuing to achieve top international ratings.
With limited vintages and historic prestige, Doctor Rieslings are among the most sought-after white wines in the world. The Dr H.
