C. von Schubert'sche Schlosskellerei Maximin Grünhaus: Mosel legend with a monastic heritage

The C. von Schubert'sche Schlosskellerei Maximin Grünhaus winery, owned by the von Schubert family since 1882, is one of the icons of Mosel Riesling. The estate near Trier comprises the historic single vineyards Abtsberg, Herrenberg and Bruderberg- steep slate slopes that were already cultivated by monks in the 6th century. The name "Maximin Grünhaus" is derived from the nearby St Maximin monastery, which once dominated the vineyards.

The von Schubert family preserves the tradition of terroir-emphasised Riesling: the mineral, long-lasting wines are produced through gentle hand-picking, spontaneous fermentation with natural yeasts and maturation in large vats (old oak barrels). The dry GG wines(Große Gewächse) as well as the fine Kabinett and Spätlesewines reflect the characteristics of the three vineyards: the Abtsberg delivers powerful elegance, the Herrenberg delicate fruit, the Bruderberg fresh lines.

Under Dr Carl von Schubert, who is the fourth generation to run the estate, the focus is on continuity and careful modernisation. The focus remains on sustainability and biodiversity. The wines, which often take decades to reach perfection, are among the most sought-after white wines in the world.

As a top VDP winery, Maximin Grünhaus stands for a unique symbiosis of monastery heritage, family passion and modern top quality.
