Tomintoul - The gentle giant of the Glenlivet Valley
Founded in 1964, the Tomintoul distillery is located in the heart of the famous Glenlivet Valley in Speyside and is known for its exceptionally smooth single malts. Nicknamed "The Gentle Dram", Tomintoul specialises in whiskies with a soft, approachable style - perfect for beginners, but with surprising complexity for connoisseurs.
Tomintoul's character is characterised by the pure spring water from the Ballantruan spring and the slow distillation in large stills. The whiskies, which are mostly matured in bourbon casks, develop elegant flavours of honey, almonds and fresh pears, with a delicate hint of vanilla. The 16-year-old bottling also reveals subtle spicy notes, while the peated edition adds a delicate hint of smoke - just enough to emphasise the gentle character without dominating it.
Tomintoul's consistent quality policy is particularly noteworthy. It is one of the few distilleries to offer a remarkable balance even in young bottlings. The 10-year-old standard bottling is considered one of the most accessible entry-level whiskies ever.
Although Tomintoul is often overshadowed by better-known neighbours such as The Glenlivet, the distillery has gained a loyal fan base with its distinctive style. With new bottlings such as the Portwood Finish series, Tomintoul proves that smoothness and character are not a contradiction in terms.
