Tomatin - From blended building block to celebrated single malt
The Scottish Tomatin distillery in the Southern Highlands can look back on a remarkable development. Founded in 1897, it was mainly a supplier of blends for decades before developing into one of the most respected single malt brands from the 1980s onwards.
Tomatin is characterised by its unusually smooth yet complex character. The use of soft highland water and the particularly slow distillation in large stills give the whisky its characteristic elegance. Most bottlings are matured in bourbon casks, which bring out notes of honey, caramel and fresh fruit such as apple and pear. The 18-year-old version also reveals subtle nuances of nuts and spices.
A particular highlight is the "Cù Bòcan" series, which experiments with slightly smoky notes and thus offers a fascinating alternative to the classic Tomatin profile. The distillery is increasingly focussing on innovative barrel maturation, including former Sauternes and port wine barrels.
With over five million litres of alcohol produced annually, Tomatin is one of the largest malt producers in Scotland. But despite its industrial size, the distillery retains its artisanal soul - every whisky is still produced with the same care as in the early days.
Today, Tomatin stands for affordable quality: whiskies that delight both beginners and connoisseurs with their balanced character and surprising depth.
