Schloss Johannisberg - the birthplace of the late harvest Riesling

Schloss Johannisberg, a vineyard of historical significance and unrivalled winemaking tradition, towers high above the Rheingau. First mentioned in a document in 817, the estate is considered the cradle of German Riesling and the site of a revolutionary discovery: late harvesting was "invented" here in 1775, when overripe grapes were deliberately vinified for the first time.

The 35-hectare, closed site - one of the oldest single vineyards in Germany - consists exclusively of south-facing Riesling on quartz-rich Taunus slate. This unique terroir factor gives the wines their characteristic balance between mineral conciseness and ripe fruit.

Schloss Johannisberg produces the entire spectrum of Rieslings typical of the Rheingau - from dry to noble sweet. The Kabinett wines and the rare Rotlack and Goldlack wines, which are only produced in exceptional years, have become particularly famous. Vintages such as 1921, 1949, 1959, 1971 and 1976 prove the exceptional ageing potential of these wines.

Today, under the management of Stefan Doktor, the winery combines 1300 years of history with state-of-the-art cellar technology. But despite all the innovations, the spirit of tradition remains palpable - in every glass that embodies the essence of Rheingau wine culture.
