Whisky Millburn - A forgotten gem from the Highlands

Millburn was a Scotch whisky distillery that operated in the Highland town of Inverness from 1807 to 1985. Although it no longer exists today, it left a lasting impression on the whisky world with its characterful single malts. The distillery was considered one of the last traditional distilleries in the region and was known for its robust, slightly smoky whiskies with an unusual fruitiness.

Millburn used locally malted barley and the clear water of the nearby River Ness, which gave the whisky a special mineral flavour. Most of the bottlings matured in bourbon casks, which gave the distillate flavours of green apples, pears and a delicate vanilla sweetness. Some older vintages also showed sherry-influenced tones of nuts and dried fruit.

Despite its quality, the distillery was unable to withstand the economic challenges of the 1980s and was eventually closed. Today, original Millburn whiskies are extremely rare collector's items that fetch top prices at auction. Bottlings from the independent distillery Gordon & MacPhail, which has bottled some of the distillery's last casks, are particularly sought-after.

Millburn may no longer be in production, but its legacy lives on in the few remaining bottles. For whisky lovers, these distillates are a fascinating journey through time into the history of Scottish single malt - a flavour that is inimitable today.
