Macduff whisky - an underrated single malt from the Highlands
Macduff is a Scottish whisky distillery that was founded in the Highlands region in 1962. Although it is less well-known than some of the major brands, it produces high-quality single malts with a distinctive character. The distillery is located near the River Deveron and utilises its fresh water for whisky production.
Macduff is known above all for its lively, fresh and slightly spicy flavours. In contrast to the often sherried whiskies from Speyside, Macduff often uses bourbon casks, which lend the whisky notes of vanilla, honey and citrus fruits. However, some bottlings are also matured in sherry casks, which provides additional depth and complex spicy flavours.
Interestingly, the distillery's whisky is often sold under other names, such as "The Deveron" or as part of blends. In recent years, however, the official Macduff bottlings have become increasingly popular, especially among connoisseurs who appreciate a clear, unadulterated malt.
One highlight, for example, is the Macduff 10 Years Old, which impresses with its fruity freshness and slightly smoky flavour. The distillery also experiments with different cask maturations, which always results in interesting bottlings.
Macduff may not enjoy the fame of Macallan or Glenfiddich, but this is precisely what makes it an insider tip for whisky enthusiasts who are looking for new flavour experiences away from the mainstream brands.
