Henri Jayer - A master of Burgundy
Henri Jayer (1922-2006) is considered one of Burgundy's most important winegrowers and had a lasting influence on the modern wine world. As a pioneer of quality-orientated viticulture, he focused on strict grape selection, low yields and gentle vinification. His most famous wine, the Cros Parantoux in Vosne-Romanée, achieved cult status and is now traded at top prices.
Jayer rejected the use of chemicals in viticulture and relied on natural methods. His philosophy emphasised the importance of the terroirand manual work in the cellar. Many of his techniques, such as cold maceration, were adopted by later generations.
Although Jayer died in 2006, his wines remain legends. They are characterised by elegance, complexity and longevity. His pupils, including Emmanuel Rouget, are continuing his legacy. Henri Jayer's influence extends far beyond Burgundy - he symbolises the dedication to artisanal perfection and the incomparable finesse of Pinot Noir.
