The Hospices de Beaune - Burgundy's vinophile heart of mercy
Since 1443, the Hospices de Beaune have embodied the unique symbiosis of Burgundy's wine culture and charitable commitment. Founded by Nicolas Rolin, the former hospital developed over the centuries into one of the most important wine-growing domains in the region. Even today, the proceeds from wine sales flow into the modern hospital centre in Beaune.
With 60 hectares of first-class vineyards - including prestigious sites such as Corton-Charlemagne, Pommard-Epenots and Meursault-Genevrières - the domain produces around 50 different cuvées every year. The wines are vinified by renowned winegrowers and reflect the terroir of the Côte de Beaune in an exemplary manner. The domain is particularly famous for its annual wine auction on the third weekend in November, which has been the world's most important wine charity since 1859.
What makes these wines so special is their threefold soul: they combine artisanal perfection, historical authenticity and humanitarian purpose. The auction, which takes place under the famous vermilion-coloured roofscape of Beaune, later results in wines that impress with crystalline clarity in the white wines and silky textures in the red wines.
As a living cultural heritage, the Hospices de Beaune have been combining wine excellence with social responsibility for almost six centuries - a Burgundian paradox that is unrivalled anywhere in the world.
