Glendronach - The sherry king of the Highlands
Founded in 1826, the Glendronach distillery in the Eastern Highlands epitomises the sherry-matured single malt. Its remote location in the Forgue Valley and traditional production methods give its whiskies an unmistakable depth and complexity.
Glendronach's characteristic style is created by the consistent use of Spanish Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez casks. This gives the whisky its deep mahogany colour and aromatic opulence: dark chocolate, ripe plums, nut nougat and a spicy orange note define the profile. The Glendronach Revival Series (12, 15, 18 and 21 years), which offers the perfect introduction to the world of sherry malts, has become particularly famous.
The distillery gained historical significance through its direct-fired stills, which were in use until 2005 - a rarity in Scotland. After a period of closure (1996-2002), Billy Walker acquired the distillery and brought it back to its former glory. Glendronach has been part of Brown-Forman since 2016, but has retained its traditional profile.
Aficionados particularly appreciate the single cask bottlings, which are bottled at natural strength and show the full range of Glendronach's character. With its lush but never intrusive style, Glendronach represents the perfect symbiosis of Scottish distilling skills and Spanish cask culture - a real treat for sherry lovers.
