Château Gruaud Larose - The soul of Saint-Julien
Château Gruaud Larose is the second Grand Cru Classé and one of the most important wine estates in the Saint-Julien appellation in Bordeaux. Its name is derived from the former owners, Messrs Gruaud and Larose, who recognised the exceptional quality of the wines as early as the 18th century. The 82-hectare vineyard is located on one of the best terroirs in the Médoc - deep gravel soils over a limestone subsoil, which give the wines structure and longevity.
The grape varieties are classically composed: 60 % Cabernet Sauvignon, 30 % Merlot and 10 % Cabernet Franc. This blend gives the wines their characteristic style - powerful, but with unmistakable elegance. Aromas of blackcurrant, cedar wood, tobacco and fine spices unfold in the glass, accompanied by silky tannins and long freshness.
Since 1997, the estate has belonged to the Merlaut Group, which has invested in modern cellar technology and sustainable viticulture. The grapes are harvested by hand and fermented in stainless steel tanks before the wine matures for 18 to 20 months in French oak barrels (50% new).
Château Gruaud Larose epitomises the perfect balance between power and finesse for which Saint-Julien is famous. A wine with great depth and ageing potential that proves year after year why it is one of the best crus classés in the Médoc.
