Château Cos d'Estournel - The pearl of Saint-Estèphe
Château Cos d'Estournel is one of the most exceptional wine estates in Bordeaux and enjoys a worldwide reputation as a second growth (Deuxième Cru Classé) of the famous 1855 classification. The estate in the northern Médoc, more precisely in Saint-Estèphe, is known for its characterful, long-lasting wines and its unique oriental-inspired architecture, which has earned it the nickname"Pagoda of the Médoc".
Terroir and grape varieties
The 91-hectarevineyard is located on a prominent gravel hill, which provides excellent drainage and optimal sunlight. The vines (on average 45 years old) are made up of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc. The mineral soils give the wines their typical structure and complexity.
Vinification and character
Château Cos d'Estournel produces powerful yet elegant wines with aromas of blackcurrants, spices, cedar wood and fine roasted flavours. The grapes are harvested by hand and fermented in modern, temperature-controlled fermentation tanks. The wine then matures for 18 months in French oak barrels (60-80% new barriques).
Vintages and reputation
Outstanding vintages such as 2000, 2005, 2015 and 2016 are among the best in the region and regularly receive Parker ratings of 95+ points. In addition to the Grand Vin, the estate also produces a second wine, Les Pagodes de Cos, which is considered an excellent introduction to the château's style.
Château Cos d'Estournel combines tradition with innovation and stands for profound, aromatically complex wines. With its unmistakable character, it is one of the great classics of Bordeaux - a must for every wine lover.
