Château Cantemerle - The quiet star of the Haut-Médoc
Château Cantemerle, the fifth Grand Cru Classé in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, is one of the most charming and underrated wine estates in the Haut-Médoc. Its history dates back to the 12th century, when it initially served as a medieval fortress before developing into one of the most renowned wine estates in the region.
With 90 hectares of vineyards, the estate lies on deep gravel soils that provide ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon (50%), Merlot (40%), Petit Verdot (5%) and Cabernet Franc (5%). The wines are characterised by their fruity elegance, silky tannins and aromatic complexity with notes of black cherries, cassis and a subtle hint of spice.
Under the management of the SMABTP insurance groupsince 1981, modern techniques have been introduced without neglecting traditional craftsmanship. Around 40% of the wine is matured in new barriques, which gives the wines structure without masking their freshness.
In addition to the Grand Vin, the second wine "Les Allées de Cantemerle" is produced. Special vintages such as 2015, 2016 and 2019show the enormous quality potential of this often overlooked vineyard. Cantemerle proves that true class does not always have to be in the limelight - an insider tip for Bordeaux connoisseurs.
