Château Ausone - The crown jewel of Saint-Émilion
Château Ausone is not only one of the oldest, but also one of the most legendary wine estates in Saint-Émilion. Its name is said to go back to the Roman poet Ausonius, who is said to have once owned vineyards here. As one of only four Premiers Grands Crus Classés A, Ausone epitomises the absolute pinnacle of Bordeaux.
On limestone soils right next to the medieval town, Merlot and Cabernet Franc in particular thrive here to produce wines of exceptional complexity and longevity. Vinification is carried out with the utmost care - from hand-picking to ageing in new barriques.
Ausone's wines fascinate with their elegant density: flavours of ripe plums, violets and mineral freshness combine to create incomparable harmony. With often over 50 years of ageing potential, they are among the longest-lived wines in the world.
The estate, which covers just 7 hectares, produces barely 2,000 cases a year - each bottle is a precious one-off. The magic of Ausone cannot be fully described in just 200 words, but its reputation as one of the world's greatest wines speaks for itself.
