Bunnahabhain whisky - the gentle soul of Islay
In the north-east of the rugged island of Islay lies the Bunnahabhain distillery - an unusual pearl among Scottish whisky producers. Since 1881, it has been producing whiskies that are strikingly different from the typical peaty Islay malts. While its neighbours impress with pitch-black smoke, Bunnahabhain impresses with unexpected smoothness and nuanced complexity.
Bunnahabhain (pronounced "Bunna-havn", Gaelic for "estuary") deliberately uses unpeated barley, which gives its whiskies a more accessible character. The soft spring water, which flows through limestone, also softens the flavour. Typical flavours include notes of nuts, dried fruit, caramel and a subtle hint of salt, reminiscent of the distillery's Atlantic location. The maturation in sherry casks, especially in bottlings such as the "Bunnahabhain 18 year old", gives the whisky a wonderful depth with hints of dark chocolate and spices.
But it's not all Islay tradition: the limited "Toiteach" series (Gaelic for "smoky") proves that Bunnahabhain is also a master of peaty whiskies. These rare bottlings combine the typical Bunnahabhain character with a hint of coastal smoke.
Bunnahabhain stands for the untold story of Islay - beyond the clichés. Whiskies of timeless elegance are created here, proving that the island can do more than just peat fireworks. Each bottle is a journey of discovery into the more subtle facets of the art of Scotch whisky.
