Yamazakura whisky - the hidden pearl from Japan's north

Yamazakura is a fascinating chapter in Japan's whisky history that has only recently begun to attract international attention. Produced in the Sakurao distillery (formerly Chugoku Jozo) in Hiroshima Prefecture, this whisky combines decades of distilling experience with typical Japanese precision. The name "Yamazakura" literally means "mountain cherry" and refers to one of Japan's most important national symbols.

What makes Yamazakura special is its unique production method. The distillery uses both its own distillates and imported Scottish malts, which it matures in Japanese Mizunara oak casks. This gives the whisky its characteristic notes of sandalwood, exotic spices and a delicate floral freshness. The younger bottlings surprise with lively fruit flavours, while older vintages develop complex depth.

A particular highlight is the "Yamazakura Single Malt", which offers astonishing quality despite its moderate price. The distillery is also experimenting with different types of cask, including former sherry and bourbon casks, which results in an interesting variety of flavours. Yamazakura has been gaining international recognition since 2020 and is considered an insider tip among connoisseurs.

In contrast to the major Japanese whisky brands, Yamazakura retains a certain modesty and originality. Each bottle tells of the artisanal tradition of a distillery that was late to turn to whisky production, but with impressive results. Yamazakura stands for the new diversity of Japanese whisky - unpretentious, but full of character.
