Whisky Nikka - Japan's legendary alternative

Nikka whisky is the second pillar of Japanese whisky alongside Suntory and stands for traditional craftsmanship and bold experimentation. Founded in 1934 by Masataka Taketsuru, the "father of Japanese whisky", the history of the distillery began in Yoichi on Hokkaido - a region whose climate Taketsuru deliberately chose because of its similarity to Scotland. Today, Nikka comprises two major distilleries, Yoichi and Miyagikyo, each of which produces distinctive whiskies.

Yoichi whiskies are known for their strong, smoky flavour, reminiscent of Scottish single malts from the Islay region. Direct coal firing of the stills creates a complex interplay of flavours consisting of peat smoke, dried fruit and a mineral note. Miyagikyo, on the other hand, surprises with more elegant, fruity and floral nuances that resonate in gentle harmony with light spice and honey.

Nikka is also famous for its creative blends such as "Nikka From the Barrel", which impresses with its compact flavour and balance. The company is also experimenting with unusual ageing methods, for example in Mizunara oak barrels or former wine and sherry casks.

With its blend of Scottish heritage and Japanese perfection, Nikka has not only enriched the whisky world, but has also proven that Japan is one of the great whisky nations alongside Scotland and Ireland. Every bottle tells of Taketsuru's vision - and of a passion that still characterises Nikka's unmistakable character today.
