Niepoort - A port house between tradition and avant-garde

Since its foundation in 1842, the Niepoort family business has been synonymous with outstanding port wines that are appreciated by connoisseurs worldwide. Based in Portugal's Douro Valley, the winery has been combining traditional craftsmanship with innovative winemaking for five generations.

Artisanal quality from old vines

Niepoort sources its grapes from ancient vines, some of which are over 100 years old, on the steep slopes of the Douro. These extremely low yields result in concentrated, mineral wines with great depth. The Vintage Ports, which are produced in outstanding vintages and can age for decades, are particularly well known.

A pioneer of the Douro region

Under the management of Dirk Niepoort, the house has developed into a pioneer. It is committed to:

  • Sustainable viticulture without herbicides

  • Spontaneous fermentation with natural yeasts

  • Experimental ageing in different barrels

This philosophy is also reflected in the unusual "Dry White Port" wines and the elegant tawnies aged for 10, 20 or 30 years.

Unique wines for connoisseurs

Niepoort deliberately avoids mass production. Each bottle reflects the unique terroir conditions of the Douro. The wines are characterised by:

  • Complex flavours of dark fruits, nuts and spices

  • Lively acidity structure

  • Long, multi-layered finish

With its mixture of respect for tradition and bold experimentation, Niepoort remains one of the most exciting addresses for high-quality port wines. The house not only characterises the port wine culture, but also sets standards for the entire Douro region.
