Leacock: A Madeira producer steeped in tradition

Leacock'sis a major name in the Madeira wine industry with a long history dating back to the 18th century. The company was founded in 1741 by John Leacock and developed into one of the leading exporters of the famous Portuguese fortified wine. Madeira, known for its longevity and complex flavours, is produced on the island of the same name, where the climate and volcanic soils provide ideal conditions for viticulture.

Leacock played an important role in international trade, particularly with Great Britain and the American colonies. In the 19th century, the company continued to expand and consolidated its reputation with high-quality wines such as Bual, Malmsey and Verdelho. These grape varieties still characterise the range today and are offered in both dry and sweet versions.

Despite economic challenges, including the phylloxera plague in the 19th century, Leacock survived the crisis and adapted to modern techniques. Today, the brand is part of the Madeira Wine Company, an association of traditional producers who preserve the island's heritage.

Leacock's wines are characterised by their balance and long ageing in barrels, with oxidative processes shaping their unique profile. They are popular with collectors and connoisseurs alike and represent the rich tradition of Madeira winemaking. With a blend of historical significance and contemporary quality, Leacock remains a major player in the world of fine wines.
