Barros - A port wine producer with tradition
Barros is one of the best-known and most renowned port wine producers in Portugal. The company was founded in 1913 and has since built up an excellent reputation for high-quality port wines, particularly the Barros tawny ports, which are characterised by their long maturation in oak barrels.
In contrast to many other port wine producers, Barros focuses heavily on the production of tawny ports, particularly those with ages of 10, 20, 30 or even 40 years. These wines are characterised by their complex aromas of dried fruit, nuts and caramel. They develop exceptional elegance and longevity through oxidative ageing.
Barros is now part of the Sogevinus Group, a large wine company that also owns other famous port wine brands such as Kopke and Burmester. Despite its modern structures, Barros remains true to its tradition and favours quality craftsmanship. The grapes come from the best vineyards in the Douro Valley, where the unique microclimate offers ideal conditions for growing port wine.
Another Barros trademark is the use of traditional lagares(granite vats) for maceration, which gives the wines additional depth. Barros port wines are highly prized by connoisseurs and collectors and are suitable for both savouring and long-term storage.
With its long history and unmistakable style, Barros remains an important ambassador of Portuguese port wine in the world.
