Tasting note: Château Rayne Vigneau 1er Cru Sauternes 1961

(Premier Cru Classé, Sauternes, Bordeaux, France)

Optics

Deep amber gold with copper-red reflections and a light, orange-coloured rim. The colour shows its age, but the clear brilliance and viscous tear formation reveal the noble sweet concentration. Minimal sediment deposits, typical of a wine aged for over 60 years.

Nose

A complex, multi-layered bouquet that masters time with nobility:

  • Tertiary aromas: overripe pineapple, thickened honey, prunes and candied ginger root.

  • Botrytis influence: Honeycomb, saffron and a gossamer mushroom spice reminiscent of damp autumn mornings in Sauternes.

  • Oxidative nuances: Toasted hazelnuts, caramelised pear and an elegant note of old mahogany wood.

Palate

A triumph of balance between sweetness and acidity:

  • Fruit & Sweetness: opulent density of date jam, dried figs and maple syrup, carried by a residual sugar that has transformed into creamy balsamic depth.

  • Structure: The acidity is surprisingly lively for its age and creates freshness alongside the sweet fullness. The alcohol (originally around 13-14%) is fully woven into the texture.

  • Texture: Silky-oily, almost flattering, with a mineral undertone (chalk?) reminiscent of the barren soils of Château Rayne Vigneau.

Finish

Extremely long and multi-faceted - flavours of roasted almonds, orange peel marmalade and an earthy spiciness (truffle?). The finish combines sweet molasses with a slightly bitter note reminiscent of dark cocoa.

Overall rating

A legendary Sauternes that captures the splendour of the 1961 vintage. Although the year is famous for its red wines, this wine shows that the sweet wines of 1961 were also masterpieces. The botrytis still characterises it today, while the acidity gives it an almost youthful freshness. A wine that is neither overripe nor tired, but rather floats in a timeless balance.

Drinking window: At its absolute peak - a wine for eternity that could last for decades, but is already perfect.
Recommendation: Decant carefully (sediment!), serve at 10-12°C with goose liver, Roquefort or as a meditation wine.

Note: A wine like this thrives on ageing. When its provenance is intact, it is a jewel that embodies the golden 1960s - a piece of liquid history. 🍷🌟

Château Rayne Vigneau proves here why Sauternes is one of the longest-lived wines in the world: A touch of immortality in every glass.
