Tasting note: Messias Vintage Port 1963, Vila Nova de Gaia, Douro
Vintage 1963:
An outstanding year for Port wines, declared a Vintage Yearby many houses. The warm, dry climate in the Douro Valley produced ripe, concentrated grapes with an ideal balance between sweetness and structure. Messias masterfully utilised the conditions to create one of the longest-lived ports of the vintage.
Grape varieties:
Classic Douro blend of Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz and other indigenous varieties - typical of traditional Vintage Ports of the era.
Appearance:
Deep mahogany colour with golden-orange reflections on the rim, a sign of decades of ageing. Clarity despite slight sediment (natural with bottle ageing).
Nose:
Opulent and complex with aromas of dried figs, dates and sultanas, surrounded by notes of caramel, walnut wood and a hint of noble oxidation. Fine undertones of cocoa, cloves and a subtle smokiness.
Palate:
Silky and full-bodied, with floating sweetness balanced by lively acidity and a subtle, fully integrated tannin structure. The taste is dominated by marzipan, candied orange peel, liquorice and a hint of dark honey. The alcohol warmth (approx. 20 %) is perfectly integrated.
Finish:
Extremely long and velvety, with a finish of walnut, chocolate bitterness and a mineral spiciness. The elegance of age is combined with astonishing freshness.
Maturity potential:
The wine has reached its peak age and should now be savoured. If stored ideally (upright, cool, protected from light), it will remain stable for years, but will no longer develop new facets.
Drinking recommendation:
Decant carefully before drinking to separate the sediment. Do not aerate for too long - 30 minutes is enough to allow the flavours to develop. Perfect with blue cheese, dark chocolate or to round off a meal. Also worth a meditation on its own.
Rating:
A timeless vintage port that epitomises the magic of the Douro and the skill of the Messias house. Despite its age, it radiates vitality and impresses with its sheer complexity and harmony. A piece of port wine history.
(96/100 points)
Note:The 1963 is one of Messias' longest-lived vintages and is now a rarity for collectors. Its elegance contrasts with the more powerful Vintage Ports of more recent vintages - typical of the classic character of the 1960s.
