Tasting note: Château Nenin Pomerol 1983

Vintage: 1983
Region: Pomerol, Bordeaux (France)
Grape varieties: Merlot-dominated with proportions of Cabernet Franc (typical for Pomerol).

Sensory analysis

Appearance:
The colour already shows clear signs of ageing: a deep garnet red with orange reflections on the rim. Slight cloudiness possible, typical of mature wines.

Nose:
A complex mix of tertiary aromas dominates: Leather, tobacco leaves, damp earth and a subtle spicy note of truffle. Underneath, there are shimmering remnants of dried fruit such as plum, fig and a hint of cedar wood. Light notes of old liquorice and smoke round off the bouquet.

Palate:
On the palate, the wine surprises with an elegant texture and a still present but softly polished tannin structure. The acidity is subtle, but sufficient to retain freshness. Aromas of dried cherries, tobacco, autumn leaves and a mineral base (graphite) characterise the palate. The maturity of the vintage is evident in the soft, almost silky centre.

Finish:
The finish is of medium length, characterised by an earthy spiciness and a hint of dark chocolate. No more dominant fruit, but a harmonious balance between maturity and subtle astringency.

Overall impression

Château Nenin 1983 is a classic, fully mature Pomerol that elegantly represents the characteristics of an older Bordeaux. Despite the challenging vintage (cool spring, damp autumn), it impresses with its complexity and typical Pomerol elegance. The fruit is restrained, but tertiary flavours dominate, testifying to careful ageing. A wine for lovers of mature, classic Bordeaux - less powerful than great vintages (e.g. 1982 or 1989), but with a nostalgic charm.

Drinking maturity:
At the peak of its development, but should be savoured. Further storage harbours the risk of degradation.

Serving suggestion:
At 16-18°C, decant for 30 minutes beforehand to separate sediment and open up flavours.

Possible combinations:
Classic with rack of lamb, duck confit or mushroom risotto. Also suitable as a meditation wine.

Background

Château Nenin is one of the oldest wine estates in Pomerol and was known for its traditional, rather rustic style before it was taken over by the Delon family in 1997. The 1983 was produced at a time when Pomerol was even less technologised than it is today - which gives it an unadulterated, terroir-influenced expressiveness. A piece of wine history that demonstrates the art of ageing.
