Tasting note: Roberto Voerzio Barolo Cerequio 1992

(Piedmont, Italy; Nebbiolo; 13-13.5% alcohol)

General:
The Roberto Voerzio Barolo Cerequio 1992 is a fascinating example of the art of a great winemaker in a difficult vintage. 1992 in Piedmont was characterised by cool temperatures and rainy autumn conditions, which led to challenges such as rot risk and reduced grape concentration. Roberto Voerzio, known for his meticulous grape selection and biodynamic farming methods, nevertheless created a Barolo of surprising elegance and complexity. The wine reflects the essence of the Cerequio terroir in La Morra - a site prized for its fine minerality and aromatic finesse.

Appearance:
Medium-intense garnet red with broad brick tones at the rim and slight translucency, the colour betrays its age but still shows vital reflections. Fine sediments in the glass emphasise its maturity.

Nose:
A ripe, tertiary bouquet dominates: dried rose petals, old leather, tobacco leaf and an earthy spiciness (truffle, humus). Delicate fruity notes of preserved cherry, prune and orange peel join subtle spicy chords (sandalwood, clove). Slight hints of balsamic vinegar and a mineral coolness (damp slate) complete the picture.

Palate:
Lean to medium-bodied with surprisingly fresh acidity that gives the wine structure. The tannins are fully integrated and silky, accompanied by aromas of dried herbs (thyme), autumn leaves and a salty, mineral character. The fruit remains subtle (ripe blackberry, plum), while tertiary notes of tobacco and bitter almond emphasise the elegance.

Finish:
Medium-long finish with a hint of liquorice, smoke and a cool stoniness. The finish is rather restrained but harmonious.

Ageing potential & drinking recommendation:
The wine is at the peak of its development and should be enjoyed within the next 5-8 years. It will remain stable when stored optimally (12-14 °C, dark), but will gradually lose its aroma. Decant it 30-45 minutes before serving to separate sediments and activate the nuances.

Suitable dishes:
Classic Piedmont cuisine such as tajarin with truffles, brasato al Barolo or mature pecorino. Also harmonious with mushroom risotto or game birds.

Rating:
An impressive Barolo that proves how talent and terroir can create great wines even in difficult years. Elegance trumps power here, with a melancholic beauty that is typical of mature Nebbiolos. ★★★★☆ (91/100).

Indication:
The 1992 vintage is rarely associated with the legendary vintages of Piedmont, but wines from disciplined producers like Voerzio surprise with longevity. This Cerequio is similar in style to the filigree Barolos of the 1980s, but remains unique - a wine for purists who appreciate the poetry of ageing. Bottles from cool cellars often show fresher acidity, while improperly stored examples can appear flatter.
