Tasting note: Marchesi Antinori Chianti Classico Riserva 2010

(Tuscany, Italy; Sangiovese (90%), Canaiolo, Cabernet Sauvignon; 13.5-14% alcohol)

General:
The Marchesi Antinori Chianti Classico Riserva 2010 is a highlight of the legendary 2010 vintage in Tuscany, celebrated for its perfect balance between ripeness and freshness. The cool nights and long ripening periods of the year helped the Sangiovese to develop intense flavours while retaining its acid structure. Antinori, one of the most influential dynasties of Chianti Classico, combines traditional craftsmanship with modern precision. As a Riserva, the wine matured for 24 months in oak barrels, giving it depth and complexity.

Appearance:
Deep ruby red with garnet-coloured reflections and delicate brick tones on the rim. Clear transparency, accompanied by oily, slow tears on the glass. Slight sediment formation as a sign of maturity.

Nose:
A multi-layered bouquet: ripe sour cherry, dried plum and violet form the fruity foundation, complemented by tertiary nuances of leather, tobacco leaf and truffle. Refined spice of clove, vanilla (from the oak barrel) and a mineral character (red clay, slate) emphasise the elegance. Slight hints of balsamic vinegar and dried rosemary round off the flavour.

Palate:
Medium to full-bodied with taut, lively acidity and silky, integrated tannins. The palate is dominated by flavours of dark cherries, cranberries and an earthy spiciness (pepper, sage). The texture is dense but elegant, with a salty-mineral undercurrent and delicate oak notes in the background. The balance between power and finesse is masterful.

Finish:
Long, vibrant finish with notes of liquorice, roasted almonds and a smoky minerality. The finish remains fresh, carried by a cool acidity line and gentle bitterness.

Maturation potential & drinking recommendation:
The wine is ready to drink, but still has potential for 8-12 years with optimal storage (14-16 °C, dark) thanks to its acid structure. Decant 45-60 minutes before serving to allow the tertiary flavours to develop.

Suitable dishes:
Ideal accompaniments are bistecca alla Fiorentina, wild boar ragout with pappardelle, lentils with pancetta or mature pecorino. Also a harmonious partner to truffle dishes.

Rating:
A classic, profound Chianti Classico Riserva that epitomises the brilliance of the 2010 vintage and Antinori's skill. ★★★★½ (94/100).

Indication:
The 2010 vintage is considered one of the greatest of recent decades in Chianti Classico - comparable to 2006 and 2016. Antinori's Riserva shows the typical freshness of the year, while many wines from warmer vintages (e.g. 2007) appear more opulent. The addition of Cabernet Sauvignon lends subtlety without breaking the Sangiovese dominance. Bottles from cool cellars still retain youthful vitality.
