Tasting note: Marchesi Antinori Chianti Classico Riserva 2012

(Tuscany, Italy; Sangiovese (90%), Canaiolo, Cabernet Sauvignon; 13.5-14% alcohol)

General:
The Marchesi Antinori Chianti Classico Riserva 2012 comes from a warm, dry vintage in Tuscany, which was characterised by early ripeness and concentrated grapes. Despite the challenges of the drought, Antinori succeeded in producing a balanced wine with typical Tuscan strength of character. Aged for 24 months in oak barrels (a combination of large Slavonian barrels and barriques), the wine developed a harmonious structure and complex flavour.

Appearance:
Deep ruby red with garnet-coloured reflections and delicate brick tones on the rim. Slight translucency, accompanied by oily, slow tears on the glass. Fine sediments indicate maturity.

Nose:
Ripe red fruits (plum, dried cherry) dominate, complemented by tertiary nuances of leather, tobacco and forest floor. Subtle spice of vanilla and clove (from the oak barrel) as well as floral notes (violet). Slight mineral undertones (red clay) and a hint of balsamic round off the bouquet.

Palate:
Medium-bodied with juicy acidity and silky integrated tannins. Flavours of dark berries, dried herbs (thyme) and an earthy spiciness (pepper, truffle) unfold on the palate. The texture is elegant, with a salty-mineral note and a gentle oak background. The balance between fruit and structure is successful, albeit less taut than in the legendary 2010.

Finish:
Medium-long finish with hints of liquorice, roasted almonds and a smoky minerality. The finish remains warm and accessible.

Ageing potential & drinking recommendation:
The wine is at the peak of its drinking maturity and should be enjoyed within the next 3-5 years. It remains stable when stored in a cool place (14-16 °C, dark). Decant it 30-45 minutes before serving to emphasise the tertiary aromas.

Suitable dishes:
Classics such as bistecca alla Fiorentina, pappardelle al cinghiale (wild boar ragout) or mature pecorino. Also harmonious with aubergine parmigiana or lentil stew with pancetta.

Rating:
A typical Antinori Riserva that combines the sun-drenched opulence of the vintage with Tuscan elegance. Convincing, if less long-lived than great vintages. ★★★★☆ (90/100).

Indication:
Due to the heat, the 2012 vintage produced accessible wines that could be drunk earlier. Antinori skilfully used the grape concentration to achieve depth without heaviness. Comparable to the 2009, but with slightly less freshness. Bottles from cool cellars often show a more lively acid structure. A wine for lovers of ripe, Mediterranean Chianti characters.
