Tasting note: Marchesi Antinori Chianti Classico Riserva 2009

(Tuscany, Italy; Sangiovese, Canaiolo, Cabernet Sauvignon; 13.5-14% alcohol)

General:
The Marchesi Antinori Chianti Classico Riserva 2009 represents the essence of traditional Tuscan viticulture paired with modern precision. The 2009 vintage in Tuscany was characterised by warm sunshine and balanced ripeness, resulting in concentrated grapes with lively acidity. Antinori, one of the most iconic families in Italian viticulture, used predominantly Sangiovese here, complemented by Canaiolo and a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon, to create a wine of classic structure and timeless elegance. As a Riserva, the wine underwent extended barrel ageing, which gave it additional complexity.

Appearance:
Deep ruby red in colour with delicate garnet reflections and a slight brick tint at the edge, clear transparency accompanied by fine sediments as a sign of maturity. The tears on the glass are slow and oily.

Nose:
A harmonious bouquet of ripe red fruits (sour cherry, plum) and tertiary nuances of leather, tobacco and dried herbs (rosemary, sage). Subtle oak notes (vanilla, roasted spices) and an earthy minerality (clay slate) emphasise the depth. Light floral accents (violets) round off the aroma.

Palate:
Medium-bodied with juicy acidity and silky integrated tannins. The palate is dominated by flavours of ripe blackberry, dried fig and a spicy mixture of black pepper and clove. The texture is elegant, with a salty-mineral undercurrent and gentle oak notes in the background. The balance between fruit and acidity is exemplary.

Finish:
Long, warm finish with notes of liquorice, balsamic and a smoky spiciness. The finish remains lively, carried by a cool mineral character.

Ageing potential & drinking recommendation:
The wine is at the peak of its drinking maturity and should be enjoyed within the next 4-7 years. It remains stable when stored in a cool, dark place (12-14 °C). Decant 30-45 minutes before serving to allow the flavours to develop.

Suitable dishes:
Classic Tuscan partners such as bistecca alla Fiorentina, wild boar pappardelle, lentil stew with pancetta or mature pecorino. Also harmonious with rustic antipasti with olives and aubergine cream.

Rating:
An exemplary Chianti Classico Riserva that combines tradition and modernity. Convinces with its balance and terroir-faithful character. ★★★★☆ (91/100).

Tip:
The 2009 vintage in Tuscany is often overshadowed by the more extreme 2007 or 2010 vintages, but here it shows how warm conditions can produce elegant wines with careful vinification. Antinori uses a mixture of large oak barrels and barriques for this Riserva in order to preserve the fruit and promote complexity at the same time. Comparable to the best Riservas of the 2000s, but with its own Mediterranean charm. Bottles from cool cellars often show fresher acidity.
