Tasting note: Château Lynch-Bages 1991 (Pauillac, Bordeaux)

The 1991 Lynch-Bages comes from a difficult Bordeaux vintage, characterised by late frosts and a cool growing season. Nevertheless, this fifth cru classé from Pauillacis one of the better wines of the vintage and shows the typical power and flavour of its terroir - albeit in a lighter, more elegant style than great vintages such as 1989 or 1990.

Sensory analysis

Colour:

  • Medium garnet red with distinct brick and orange tones - already advanced in maturity.

Nose:

  • Classic Pauillac aromas: blackcurrant (cassis), dried plum, cedar, graphite.

  • Tertiary development: Leather, tobacco leaf, damp earth, a hint of truffle.

  • Woody notes: Vanilla, roasted coffee beans, subtle smoky spice.

  • Rather restrained overall, but with typical Pauillac character.

Palate:

  • Medium-bodied with a fine acid structure - the tannins are soft and well integrated.

  • Flavours of ripe blackberries, black pepper, laurel and a slightly bitter cocoa note.

  • Finish: Moderately long, with a pleasant spiciness (pepper, iron) and a slightly tart mineral note.

Overall impression:
An elegant, ready-to-drink Pauillac - not as powerful as great vintages, but with typical terroir charm and good balance.

Rating & ageing potential

  • Parker (RP): ("A surprisingly good wine for the vintage")

  • Drinking window: Now - 2028 (already fully mature, should not be stored for too long).

  • Decanting: 30-45 minutes to open up the flavours.

Serving recommendation:

  • Saddle of lamb with herb crust

  • Wild boar ragout with chestnuts

  • Matured hard cheese (e.g. Comté or Gouda)

Conclusion:

A solid, easy-drinking Lynch-Bages from a weak vintage - not a spectacular wine, but with a typical Pauillac profile and good drinking maturity.

Tip: If you have a bottle, open it soon - the wine won't get any better, but is now at its peak.
