Tasting note: Joseph Drouhin Côte de Beaune Rouge 2006

(Burgundy, France; Pinot Noir; 12.5-13% alcohol)

General:
The 2006 Joseph Drouhin Côte de Beaune Rouge represents the classic elegance of Burgundy from a vintage that was characterised by cool temperatures and damp conditions. The Domaine Joseph Drouhin, known for its precise elaboration of wines true to the terroir, has created a harmonious red wine from Pinot Noir grapes from the regional Côte de Beaune appellation. Despite the challenges of the year, the wine impresses with its balance and maturity.

Appearance:
Medium ruby red colour with delicate orange tones on the rim, typical of mature Burgundy. The colour appears slightly translucent, with fine sediment in the glass. The viscosity is slender, the tears run down slowly.

Nose:
A ripe, multi-layered bouquet with tertiary aromas of dried cherries, wild mushrooms and autumn leaves. Underneath, subtle fruity notes of cranberry, preserved raspberry and floral accents (violets, fading roses) resonate. Refined spice of sandalwood, clove and a pinch of black pepper - hints of careful oak barrel ageing.

Palate:
Lean to medium body with lively acidity that gives the wine freshness despite its age. The tannins are silky and fully integrated. Aromas of redcurrant, dried herbs (thyme) and an earthy minerality (damp stone) dominate, with light notes of liquorice and smoke underlining the complexity. The balance between fruit and acidity is successful, albeit with restrained vigour.

Finish:
Medium-long finish, characterised by a salty minerality, delicate bitterness (tea leaf) and a hint of tobacco. Elegant, but rather restrained in the aftertaste.

Maturation potential & drinking recommendation:
The wine is at the peak of its drinking maturity and should be enjoyed within the next 2-3 years. Improper storage could cause the already delicate flavours to fade further. Decanting for 20-30 minutes is recommended to allow the nuances to unfold.

Suitable dishes:
Classic Burgundy accompaniments such as roast duck breast, coq au vin, mushroom pâtés or matured Camembert. Also suitable as an accompaniment to Mediterranean antipasti with olives and dried tomatoes.

Rating:
A typical, rather light Côte de Beaune with charm and maturity, reflecting the signature of the vintage and Drouhin's delicate vinification. Convinces through finesse, not power. ★★★☆☆ (89/100).

Notice:
The 2006 vintage in Burgundy produced predominantly accessible, precocious wines that were rarely designed for extreme longevity. This Côte de Beaune Rouge shows how careful selection and traditional vinification can deliver harmonious results even in difficult years. Comparable to wines from Savigny-lès-Beaune or Santenay.
