Château Beychevelle - elegance and prestige in the Médoc
Château Beychevelle is one of the most famous wine estates in Bordeaux, more precisely in the Saint-Julien appellation in the Médoc. With its imposing château architecture and a history dating back to the 16th century, it embodies the tradition and splendour of French viticulture. The name "Beychevelle" is derived from "Baisse-Voile" ("hoist the sails"), a tribute to the former owner, the Admiral of France.
The estate has 90 hectares of vineyards, which are predominantly planted with Cabernet Sauvignon (52%), Merlot (40%), Cabernet Franc (6%) and Petit Verdot (2%). The wines of Beychevelle are known for their balanced elegance, velvety tannins and aromatic complexity, with notes of blackcurrant, cedar wood and fine spices.
As a Fourth Cru Classé (1855 classification), the Château produces a Grand Vin, which is one of the best in the Médoc, as well as the second wine "Amiral de Beychevelle". Since 2011, the winery, under the management of Philippe Blanc, has focussed on modern cellar technology while at the same time preserving its classic expressiveness.
Beychevelle enjoys a high reputation worldwide, especially in Asia, where it has cult status as a "lion wine" (because of the heraldic animal). The wines are long-lived and are among the most sought-after Bordeaux crus.
