St Magdalene - A lost jewel of the Lowlands
Founded in 1798 in Linlithgow, the St Magdalene distillery - later also known as Linlithgow - was one of the most important whisky producers in the Scottish Lowlands before it closed its doors for good in 1983. Like many classic Lowland distilleries, it specialised in light, unpeated single malts of exceptional elegance, which today are among the most sought-after rarities in the whisky world.
St Magdalene whiskies were famous for their complex yet restrained character. Typical flavours included freshly cut hay, delicate citrus notes and a subtle mineral spiciness, complemented by nuances of honey and almonds. In contrast to many modern whiskies, they did not impress with their strength, but with their delicate variety of flavours and perfect balance. Linlithgow 1965 became particularly famous and is considered one of the best Lowland whiskies of all time.
The closure of the distillery during the whisky crisis of the 1980s was a great loss for the whisky tradition. Today, the former distillery buildings are listed buildings, while the few remaining original bottlings fetch top prices at auction.
St Magdalene embodies the ephemeral poetry of Scotch whisky history like almost no other distillery. Every surviving bottle is a precious contemporary document - a silent witness to the lost art of traditional Lowland whiskies.
