Invergordon - The stronghold of grain whisky
Invergordon is one of the leading distilleries for Scotch grain whisky and has developed into one of the largest production sites of its kind since it was founded in 1959. Unlike most distilleries in Scotland, Invergordon is not located in a rural idyll, but in the industrial heart of Scotch whisky production - on the Cromarty Firth in the Highlands.
The speciality of Invergordon lies in the production of grain whisky from wheat, which produces a particularly pure and neutral spirit through continuous distillation. This forms the basis of many famous blended whiskies, including well-known brands such as Whyte & Mackay and Johnnie Walker. However, Invergordon also impresses as a single grain whisky with its gentle sweetness and creamy texture.
Typical of Invergordon whiskies are flavours of vanilla, caramel and fresh biscuits, which are the result of ageing in American oak casks. The older bottlings, such as the Invergordon 30 or 40 Year Old, attract particular attention, developing a deep complexity due to their long maturation - with notes of tropical fruit, honey and delicate spices.
Although grain whiskies are often overshadowed by the better-known single malts, Invergordon has shown the elegance that lies within this category. The distillery epitomises the often underestimated art of grain whisky production and proves that these whiskies are not only important for blends, but can also inspire as stand-alone products.
