Château Haut Brion 1979

Die Weinbergslagen auf Chateau Haut Brion sind bestückt mit 45 Prozent Merlot, 40 Prozent Cabernet Sauvignon und 15 Prozent Cabernet Franc. Die gesamte Fläche von Haut Brion beträgt 42,50 Hektar und es zählt somit zu den kleinen 1er cru classé Gütern. Auf Chateau Haut Brion wird neben dem herausragenden Erstwein auch ein sehr guter Zweitwein mit Namen Bahans de Chateau Haut Brion und ein sensationeller weißer Graves als Haut Brion Blanc hergestellt. Die Gesamtproduktion auf Haut Brion beträgt in etwa abhängig von Jahrgang und Qualitätsstufe, 200.000 Flaschen à 0,75. Historisch gesehen wurde das Anwesen von Chateau Haut Brion erstmal wohl 1423 urkundlich erwähnt. Jean de Pontac, der Inhaber von Haut Brion zu damaligen Zeit, erbaute 1550 auch ein Anwesen auf den Ländereien und investierte großzügig in Fortschritt und Weinbau. Er war ein umtriebiger Mann, immer auf der Suche nach Neuerungen für sein Weingut Chateau Haut Brion. Neben dieser Tätigkeit war er auch Notar, Conseiller du Roi und Präsident des Parlementes von Bordeaux. Nach seinem Tod im Jahre 1589 ging Haut Brion an seinen vierten Sohn mit Namen Arnaud II de Pontac. Es folgten einige weitere Besitzwechsel in der Familie Pontac, bis schließlich 1801 der französische Staatsmann Charles-Maurice de Talleyrand-Périgord Haut Brion erwarb. Aufgrund seiner Tätigkeit als Staatsmann konnte er sich aber nur begrenzt dem Gut Haut Brion widmen und veräußerte dies schon im Jahre 1804. Drauffolgend kaufte im Jahre 1836 Joseph-Eugène Larrieu Chateau Haut Brion und entschloss sich dann zusätzlich, im Jahre 1841 das fehlende Drittel nun wieder dem Gut Chateau Haut Brion beizufügen. André Gibert wollte im Jahre 1934 das Schloss und das gesamte Anwesen Haut Brion der Stadt Bordeaux zu Schenkung anbieten, unter der Bedingung, dass weiterhin Weinbau auf Chateau Haut Brion betrieben wird. Zähe Verhandlungen und politische Querelen sorgten letztlich dafür, dass Haut Brion von C. Douglas Dillon gekauft wurde. Die Dillons stammen aus einer amerikanischen Bankierfamilie und versuchten von Anbeginn, Chateau Haut Brion weiter voranzutreiben und Verbesserungsmaßnahmen durchzusetzen. Im Moment führt Jean-Philippe Delmas in dritter Generation die Geschicke des Hauses Haut Brion mit Bravur. Zu Haut Brion gehören auch La Mission Haut Brion und La Tour Haut Brion beides herausragende Weine mit Bestnoten der Weinkritiker. Gerade La Mission Haut Brion ist ein Stern im Graves-Gebiet.

Class in 1979 and still available for little money compared to newer vintages, the Haut Brion. Between 1986 and 2004, drunk a good 2 dozen times with great enthusiasm, in 2004 in the Traube Grevenbroich a perfect bottle, strong colour without much age, perfect cigarbox nose, long on the palate, complex, with good acidity - 93/100. 2006 at the big Haut Brion tasting again classic, mature Haut Brion at a high level. Ripe without ageing tones with very intact colour, the classic cigarbox nose, smoky tones, leather and truffles, soft, complex and long on the palate - 93/100. 2007 again sheer delight, still dense, very young colour, the classic cigarbox nose is mixed with an incredible amount of Valrhona, chocolate at its finest also dominates the palate, becomes finer, softer and smoother on the palate with time, will certainly remain at this high level for several years in good bottles - 94/100 (source: Wineterminator.com Dr. Becker).

WA 93 (1/1998): This wine has enjoyed a spectacular development in the bottle, and, while drinkable upon release, it remains one of the most sumptuous, complex, and satisfying Haut-Brions of the last twenty years. It is certainly the finest wine of the vintage from Bordeaux's Left Bank. The wine has taken on a dark plummy/garnet color, and displays a magnificent tres Haut-Brion nose of jammy black fruits, earth, tobacco, smoke, and sweet fruitcake aromas. It is rich and medium to full-bodied, with impressive elegance, purity, and overall harmony. This is not a powerhouse or exceptionally opulent style of Haut-Brion (such as the 1989 and 1990), but, rather, a more structured, yet authoritatively flavorful wine. It offers power, richness, and elegance in a wine with extraordinary equilibrium. Anticipated maturity: Now-2006. Last tasted 10/97. WS 88 (4/1997): Rich, ripe fruit character beneath a layer of chewy tannins. A bit lean in texture but generous with its focused flavors. Reaching its best now.--Haut-Brion vertical.
