Tasting notes Alto di Bruca - Brunello di Montalcino DOCG Tuscany 2005
Appearance:
The colour is an elegant, deep ruby red with delicate orange reflections on the rim - a sign of maturity. The viscosity is supple, with a slow, noble dripping "tear" in the glass.
Bouquet:
The bouquet is intense and multi-layered, carried by ripe aromas of dried cherries, stewed plums and soaked figs. Spicy nuances of laurel, dried thyme and a smoky underlay reminiscent of cedar wood and fine tobacco unfold underneath. Light notes of truffle, leather and a hint of balsamic vinegar lend depth and complexity to the fragrance.
Palate:
The wine is powerful yet balanced on the palate. The ripe fruit of dates and prunes blends harmoniously with lively acidity and silky, well-integrated tannins. Notes of dark chocolate, cloves and a mineral vein (graphite, clay) structure the flavour. The texture is velvety and of mature elegance, with a subtle bitterness in the background reminiscent of walnut kernels.
Finish:
The finish is long and lingering, dominated by a blend of seasonal autumn spices, dried herbs and smoky spice. Slight hints of liquorice and tobacco leaves linger, accompanied by a fresh, almost salty minerality.
Overall impression:
The Alto di Bruca 2005 is a Brunello of classic stature, masterfully embodying the characteristics of the difficult but underrated 2005 vintagein Tuscany. Despite the wetter climate in autumn, its maturity and balance are convincing, with the distinctive acidity and tannins now harmoniously integrated. The tertiary aromas dominate without completely displacing the fruit - a wine that honours its origins in the barren soils of Montalcino.
Recommendation:
Optimally uncorked and decanted to release possible sediment. Perfect with game dishes (venison, wild boar), truffle risotto or mature pecorino. A wine that is at its peak today and demonstrates the poetry of ageing - provided it has been stored under ideal conditions since bottling. A piece of Tuscan history in a glass. 🍷✨
